On October 14, 2023, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced the release of the first edition of the IndiaAI 2023 report, crafted by an expert group. According to #MeitY, this report forms the core of India's Artificial Intelligence #AI strategy, employing a mission-centric approach to ensure a precise and coherent strategy. This strategy aims to bridge gaps in the existing AI ecosystem, encompassing computing infrastructure, data, AI financing, research, innovation, targeted skilling, and institutional capacity for data, all geared towards maximizing AI's potential for advancing India's progress.
In particular, the report consists of recommendations from seven expert groups. It elucidates the operational aspects of establishing Centers of Excellence CoEs and the institutional framework governing data collection, management, processing, and storage through the National Data Management Office #NDMO. The report outlines three key functions of NDMO, namely, data integrity and audit, data regulation, and data management. Furthermore, it emphasizes that NDMO should establish standards in accordance with the principles of Privacy by Design, promote the utilization of privacy-enhancing technologies and systems, and adapt global best practices and standards where feasible for India.
IndiaAI 2023: Expert Group Report – First Edition
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology #MeitY formed seven expert groups to collectively brainstorm the vision, objectives, outcomes, and design for each pillar of IndiaAI. These Working Groups have presented the inaugural edition of the IndiaAI report, which delineates the core of India's AI strategy as envisioned by the Honorable Prime Minister.
The Indian government's approach to AI has been comprehensive and ambitious, evident in the broad scope of government interventions within the IndiaAI umbrella program.
