ATHENS (Reuters) - A strong earthquake shook central Athens at 1130 GMT (6:30 a.m. EDT) on Sunday, witnesses said, but there were no immediate reports of damages or casualties.
The earthquake lasted for about seven seconds and Greek television said it was felt as far away as 200 km (120 miles) north of the capital.
In September 1999, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Athens, killing at least 143 people and leaving 60,000 people homeless.
Strong Undersea Earthquake Rattles Greece
ATHENS, Greece ”€ A strong undersea earthquake shook Greece and was felt as far away as Egypt, officials said Sunday.
The temblor had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 and took place near the island of Kithira, about 125 miles south of Athens, the Athens Geodynamic Institute said. No injuries were reported, but there were minor damages.
The earthquake was felt in Cairo, Egypt, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
