Chemicals: New European Commission determined to make REACH a success

Vice President Tajani and Commissioner Poto?nik have swiftly followed up on their undertaking given during their Hearings in the European Parliament by together visiting the European Chemicals Agency, ECHA, in Helsinki on 25 March. They are taking action to make progress towards the registration of chemicals and the management of substances of very high concern. Of particular importance is the smooth implementation of the registration of high-volume chemicals by the REACH deadline of 30 November 2010 by implementing solutions to practical problems to support industrys work, in particular SMEs. Both Commissioners also announced their common approach on the identification and management of substances of very high concern. They also welcomed progress on the translation of the guidelines for the implementation of REACH. Both commissioners underlined their commitment to the success of REACH, the European Chemicals Regulation.

Modernising education and training: a vital contribution to prosperity and social cohesion in Europe

This is the second report on progress under the "Education & Training 2010" work programme. Even though national reforms are going in the right direction, the pace of reform must be speeded up. Investment in pre-school education is of paramount importance for preventing school failure and social exclusion, and for laying the foundations for further learning. The report concludes that, unless significantly greater efforts are made in the areas of early school-leaving, completion of upper-secondary education, and key skills, a larger proportion of the next generation will face social exclusion.

Moderniser l’èducation et la formation: une contribution essentielle à la prospèritè et à la cohèsion sociale en Europe

Le prèsent rapport est le deuxième rapport sur les progrès accomplis dans la mise en Å“uvre du programme de travail «É°ducation et formation 2010». Mème si les rèformes nationales vont dans la bonne direction, leur rythme doit accèlèrer. l’investissement dans l’enseignement prèscolaire revèt une importance cruciale pour prèvenir l’èchec scolaire et l’exclusion sociale, et pour jeter les bases de la formation tout au long de la vie. Le rapport conclut qu'à moins que des efforts nettement plus importants ne soient consentis en ce qui concerne les abandons scolaires, l’achèvement de l’enseignement secondaire supèrieur et les compètences clès, une plus grande proportion de la prochaine gènèration sera confrontèe à l’exclusion sociale.

Protection of the EU's Financial Interests: Commission welcomes European Parliament’s call for increased cooperation by Member States

The European Parliament adopted today a report on the protection of the EU’s financial interests. The European Commission welcomes this document as an important support in the fight against fraud affecting the EU budget. The report by rapporteur Francesco Musotto highlights the paramount importance of a constructive cooperation between the Member States and the Commission. It stresses the key responsibility of the Member States for the sound management of Community revenue and expenditure, in particular in the areas of agriculture and structural funds, and including the recovery of unduly spent sums. Finally, the report requests concrete follow-up actions, including measures against certain Member States

Protection des intèrèts financiers de l’UE: La Commission accueille favorablement l’appel

Le Parlement européen a adopté aujourd'hui un rapport sur les intérêts financiers de l’UE. La Commission européenne se félicite de ce document qui devrait constituer un soutien important dans la lutte contre la fraude portant atteinte au budget de l’UE. Le rapport de M. Francesco Musotto met en évidence l’importance primordiale d'une coopération constructive entre les états membres et la Commission. Il souligne la responsabilité clé des états membres en ce qui concerne la bonne gestion financière des recettes et des dépenses communautaires, notamment dans les secteurs de l’agriculture et des Fonds structurels, y compris le recouvrement des sommes indûment versées. Enfin, le rapport demande des actions de suivi concrètes, notamment des mesures à l’encontre de certains états membres

MEPs speak out in favour of more regional cooperation in the Black Sea region and the South Caucasus

The European Parliament adopted two reports, calling for more regional cooperation in the Black Sea and South Caucasus regions. In both areas, the House stressed the importance both of democratic principles and human rights and of the necessity to improve economic and trade relations, especially regarding energy supplies.
